A brand new concrete skate park is not far from being built here in Whitecourt thanks to the Skate Park Society.

Plans to build a new park are being presented to town council and must be finalized by July 31.

Vice President Jim Ward says making the park bigger and more modern will help attract users.

Millar Western Employee Honored with Award   ( 4/30/2008 )

The Planning Superintendant of Millar Western has been honored by the CAPFT for his contributions to the forestry industry.

Ray Hilts was presented with the very first Forest Technologists Achievement award for his proficiency in forest management planning.

Hilts is humbled by the acknowledgement and is happy the extra work has paid off.

The award was given on April 18th.

New Officers Coming to Whitecourt   ( 4/29/2008 )

The Whitecourt RCMP will welcome some new members come fall.

The town's police committee has decided to move forward in adding to Whitecourt's police service, with a little help from the federal and provincial governments.

Director of Community Services Jay Granley says there will be 2 officers arriving sometime in the fall to help protect the area.

Funding for the officers will be covered by both the town and the provincial government.

Traffic Light Proposal   ( 4/29/2008 )

Traffic flowing through the intersection of highway 43 and hospital road has been a major concern to the community.

While the motion of putting up traffic lights to patrol the intersection was tentatively dismissed, other options are being explored.

Mayor Trevor Thain told XM105 something needs to be done in the near future such as reducing the speed limit in that area.

The town will broach the subject with the ministry again within the next month.

15 Passenger Vans Banned   ( 4/28/2008 )

The Northern Gateway Regional School division is moving away from 15 passenger vans.

A decision has been made to start moving towards safer vehicles like 24 passenger buses.

Superintendent for Northern Gateway Kevin Andrea says the decision was made after the recent events in New Brunswick and the Wolf Creek area.

By the end of the school year, buses will have been ordered and in operation.

Nuke Panel For The Province   ( 4/28/2008 )

The provincial government is planning to take the next steps in learning more about nuclear power.

Plans are in the works to set up a panel, which would investigate a recent application by the Ontario based Bruce Power Company, to build a reactor in Peace River.

Alberta Energy Public Affairs Officer Sean Bear-dow, says the panel will be in charge of evaluating the province's need, as well as looking at the concerns of the public.

The panel should be established as soon as possible.

Aspen Health Region Looking For Workers   ( 4/23/2008 )

Our local health region is looking to recruit workers.

The Aspen Health Region is in the midst of their summer nursing program, which gives first, second and third year students a chance to gain some experience before they graduate.

Regional Recruitment Co-ordinator Kent Graham, says the program will be beneficial because it will create a lot of hands on opportunities, as well as free up the summer months for the regular full-time staff.

The Summer Recruitment Program will run until the end of August.
